As someone who has been in the home and design business for a while, one of the most common conversations, when talking with my clients, involves paint colours. Choosing paint colours is one of my favourite things to do. And, trust me, I have done lots of it. This is why I decided to share with you my to go steps and tips for selecting paint for your home.

  • LETS TALK ABOUT WHITES:

Choosing the right paint colour is already lots of work, but in my opinion, selecting a white paint is even harder! But why? They are the same colour? If you have never had to select a white paint before you will want to gather all of the white paints you have, brilng them in the room to be pained, and in order to narrow down your selection; lay all of your paint chips together and look at them side by side. You’ll start to notice that one will look pinker, one will have a tinge of green, the other a tinge of yellow, etc. This step will help you to differentiate the undertone. My end goal when picking a white is to go for the most neutral one.

My favourite whites by Benjamin Moore are:

Simply White

Oxford White

Chantilly Lace

Cloud Cover

Cloud White

  • ALL THE COLOURS IN THE RAINBOW:

No matter what colour you are attracted to, it's important to take in consideration the permanent materials in your room. Take one paint chip at a time and see how they marry with the flooring, how the color looks by your curtains, furniture etc.

  • LOOK AT THE PAINT THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND NIGHT:

If you can, get your desired paint in the room you want it (get paint chips or test a spot with some of the paint directly on the wall). Once its in look at it at carefully at all times of the day as it would be exposed by different lights. Throughout the day as the sun changes (and as the seasons change), your paint colour will look a little different from time to time. Depending on the time of day they can look different and its important you see what that colour would be to avoid surprises. That being said, artificial lighting also like your light bulbs in your home, can really affect your paint colour … sometimes it can make your room look cool and purple … if you have those daytime or potlight bulbs, it might make things look more yellow. So, before you decide to repaint your entire room, start changing out your bulbs first to see how that changes the look of things!

  • SELECT YOUR PRIMER:

Something I have learned throughout the years is to avoid plain white primer. This one is simply for the fact that it’s just so cold! I would recommend avoiding plain white primer just for this reason alone! You can ask the staff at your paint shop to tint your primer with a drop of colour that you are getting, so that your primer is already coloured and just a level down from your wall paint color. You'll notice that coverage will go extremely easier than transitioning from pure stark white.

Next on your to-do list? Get that room painted. Knock it out like a pro with these quick tips: ⁣

First, clean all the walls with a gentle cleanser so the new paint will properly adhere. Allow the walls to dry.⁣

1. Then, using a tapered brush, choose a wall and cut in the ceiling, trim, and corners. Don’t fuss with painters’ tape — you’ll save a ton of time and get a better end result.⁣

2. Next, paint the wall you just cut in with the roller. If you need a break, wrap your roller in a plastic grocery bag. Paint dries fast, and you def don’t want messy clumps.

3. Depending on your ceiling height, pick up a roller extender to keep those feet off a clumsy ladder.⁣

Repeat steps 2 & 3 until all the walls are painted. Let the paint fully dry before deciding if you need a second coat.⁣

Be sure to keep a damp rag handy to clean up any goofs right away.

Be sure to request my paint guide; where i share all all of my top choice wall and cabinet neutrals, whites, grays and blues as well as my favourite trusted painters in the city. And if your to-do list includes painting AND hunting down a fabulous realtor, give me a call today. I'd love to chat and talk about getting your home on the market — fast!⁣
